The Zambia Association of Paediatric Surgeons (ZAPS) successfully held its 3rd Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, bringing together paediatric surgeons, trainees, nurses, neonatologists, allied health professionals, and partners committed to advancing children’s surgical care in Zambia. The meeting was held under the theme; Building Capacity, Saving Futures: Strengthening Paediatric Surgical Care in Zambia.
The week commenced with a Paediatric Surgery Masterclass for final-year trainees, providing intensive academic and practical learning opportunities aimed at strengthening the next generation of paediatric surgeons.
The scientific conference showcased a diverse range of 13 Scientific presentations addressing key challenges and innovations in paediatric surgical care. Topics included intestinal stoma outcomes and complications, day-case paediatric surgery, typhoid perforation outcomes, neonatal surgery results, hydrocephalus audits, paediatric oncology, and service development across the country.
A major highlight was the dedicated session on gastroschisis care, featuring regional experiences, quality improvement initiatives, and a multidisciplinary panel discussion focused on reducing mortality and improving outcomes in resource-limited settings. The discussions generated valuable recommendations for strengthening neonatal surgical care nationwide.
The conference also provided a platform for collaboration with healthcare partners and industry stakeholders through sponsor presentations and exhibitions, fostering opportunities for innovation and support in paediatric surgical services.
Leadership messages were delivered by representatives from ZAPS, the Surgical Society of Zambia, and University Teaching Hospitals, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, training, advocacy, and sustainable capacity building.
The meeting concluded with the ZAPS Annual General Meeting and elections, where members reviewed progress, discussed strategic priorities, and reaffirmed their commitment to improving access to safe, timely, and quality surgical care for every child in Zambia.
