Long before he became a renowned paediatric surgeon, he was a young boy fascinated by the world of surgery. Inspired by surgical programmes on television, he created his own makeshift “wet laboratory,” performing mock operations on frogs. While others saw entertainment, he saw a calling. Surgery was not just a career he chose—it was a passion that found him early.
That childhood curiosity would eventually become a lifetime dedicated to saving the lives of children.
For decades, Dr. Bvulani has stood at the forefront of paediatric surgery in Zambia, caring for some of the country’s most fragile patients. Every child brought into the operating theatre carries a family’s deepest hopes, and through his skill, compassion, and dedication, he has helped countless children overcome conditions that once threatened their futures.
Today, he serves as Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, Head of the Paediatric Surgery at the University Teaching Hospital, Country Coordinator for Paediatric Surgery, and Coordinator of Paediatric Surgery Training for COSECSA and University of Zambia respectively. His influence extends beyond Zambia through his leadership role as Honorary Treasurer of the Pan African Paediatric Surgical Association (PAPSA).
Those fortunate enough to stand beside him in theatre witness something extraordinary. Dr. Bvulani operates with both his left and right hand, transitioning seamlessly during delicate procedures with remarkable precision. To surgeons and trainees, it is a demonstration of technical mastery—the transformation of surgical skill into a form of art.
More than 21 years after qualifying as a surgeon, Dr. Bvulani’s greatest achievement is no longer measured by the complexity of the operations he has performed, but by the people he has built.
Across Zambia, paediatric surgeons carry his influence—not only through the techniques they learned, but through the principles he represents: humility, discipline, excellence, and compassion.

Among the defining moments of Dr. Bvulani’s career was his contribution to the successful separation of conjoined twins in 2019—a landmark achievement in Zambia’s surgical history.
In recognition of this extraordinary feat and his distinguished service to the nation, he was awarded the Insignia of Meritorious Achievement by the President of the Republic of Zambia, one of the country’s highest honours for outstanding national service.
But ask Dr. Bvulani what brings him the greatest fulfilment, and he will speak about children returning years later, healthy and thriving. He will speak about parents who return simply to say, “Thank you.” And he will speak with pride about the young surgeons he has trained who now lead and serve others.
Beyond medicine, he finds joy in gardening, photography, drawing, and jazz music. His family also knows him for his unique humour—delivering jokes so deep that everyone else laughs while he remains completely composed.
His message to aspiring paediatric surgeons is simple:
